Christmas is here

We started decorating the classroom for Christmas today. We took turns putting decorations on the tree and helped Ms. Fahy put stickers on the windows. It's really starting to feel festive now.

Drama

We have been studying traditional tales in literacy lessons. In drama we chose a traditional tale and mimed an important scene from the story. The rest of the class had to guess what story we were acting out. We had loads of fun.

A visit from the army

Three members of the army presented our school with a Proclamation of Independence and an Irish flag to commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Rising. We loved meeting them and hearing about their peacekeeping missions abroad.
We sang Amhrán na bhFiann after the presentation.

Scríobh Workshop

Javi and Niall from Scríobh came to work with us. They wanted to write stories with 1st, 2nd and 3rd class. They work in a publishing house but their boss, Mrs. McClonkey doesn't think that children can be authors. She thinks children have no imaginations. She is wrong! We created a super story with Niall and Javi. Ms. Fahy printed them out and we illustrated our work. We are super authors.

Universal Children's Day

Friday 20th November was Universal Children's Day.

We had so much fun celebrating Children's Day. During the week we talked about the rights of children and designed posters showing our rights. Ms. Fahy said we could celebrate Children's Day by doing lots of fun activities. In the morning we worked together to set up our new role play area, a toy shop. Then we baked banana muffins with Crona and learned about children in other countries with Ms. Fahy. We know that we are very lucky children, we have families and friends who love us, warm houses, clean water, a lovely school and lots of people who care for and protect us. We decided to make bunting showing all of the things we are grateful for.
Later on we did a science experiment "Walking on Air". We blew up eight balloons and put a table on top of them. Some people held the table steady and we took turns walking on the table and guess what...........the balloons didn't burst. Amazing! Ms. Fahy explained that balloons can hold a heavy weight if the weight is spread out over a large surface area. When the balloon flattens out enough, the pressure of the air inside the balloon equals the pressure of the desk on the balloon and the balloon can support the weight of the desk.
Finally in the afternoon Fireman Pete came to talk to us about fire safety. We went outside to see the fire engine, Pete turned on the alarm and the hose and showed us all the equipment kept in the fire engine.

What a super day!

We are grateful for.....
