Greeting People Around the World

For our Green flag we are studying Global Citizenship. Today we discussed how people in other countries greet each other. We had great fun acting out each greeting and choosing our favourites. We also learnt how to say hello in other languages.
Irish- Dia duit
French- Bonjour/ Salut
Turkish- Merhaba
Chinese- Ni hao
Italian- Ciao
Spanish- Hola
Japanese- Kon'nichiwa
German- Guten tag
Arabic- Salaam alaykum
In New Zealand Maori people show respect by putting their foreheads together.

The Inuit, who live in Canada, rub noses.

In Polynesia you take your friend's hands and use them to stroke your face.

In Tibet people stick out their tongues out to greet each other. This shows you have no evil thoughts.

In Japan people bow from the waist.

Fist bumping originated in the U.S.A in the 1940s. It is also used as a greeting in Belize.
